Bus Driver of the Year 2022
Posted on Oct 13, 2022We sponsored Bus Driver of the Year Awards 2022! Delyth, our Business Development Officer, attended the awards in Blackpool at the beginning of October. “Voyager Alliance Credit Union is proud to support the UK bus industry by providing an invaluable, free staff benefit to improve financial resilience and wellbeing for all drivers and all supporting staff”.
Blackpool has been home to the National Finals since 1982, and we were proud to sponsor the awards for another year running!
Delyth wished the finalists good luck with one of your hand-crafted packs, with Voyager Alliance freebies inside!
Andrea, Emily and Delyth designed, and put together 300 of our good luck packs, containing lots of information on Voyager Alliance, what we do and our services to our members. The packs are mementos of this tremendous achievement, and we hope the torch, pen and notepad inside remind the drivers of their success during the competition!
“It is great that we make it so easy for staff to save and borrow with us and the BDoY Awards raised great awareness of this to the drivers, their managers and the rest of their teams. I met some great people over the weekend, and got to talk all about what we do and I was thrilled to give each competing driver a good luck pack and some goodies!”
The Bus Driver of the Year event originally begin as a road safety competition first held by Mr John Boxall MBE who is now the Honorary President of Bus Driver of the Year. As the competition grew in the following years, more bus operators joined the event and by the mid 1970s, Bus Driver of the Year Awards has become a national competition!
Reflecting on the event, Delyth said “A highlight of the weekend for me was attending the briefing of the competition with the finalists. I was able to wish everyone good luck individually and then over the rest of the weekend, they would recognise me and would come and chat to me while they weren’t competing.”
“I was taken back by the seriousness of the competition, with exams on the laws of bus driving and the finalists were even tested driving vehicles from different companies and the marshals had their tape measures at the ready!”
“The pinnacle of the weekend was the awards ceremony.” Stagecoach took home first place runner-up and third place, with Michael Evans been crowned UK Bus Driver of the Year 2022. Michael drives for Stagecoach South Wales at its Porth Depot, where he has worked for 5 years since changing career from car sales!
“The event is prestigious, and the competition was outstanding so huge congratulations to everyone involved! We’re already looking forward to the awards in 2023 and sponsoring this monumental Bus driver calendar event once again!”
